🟥🟦 WILLASTON FOOTBALL CLUB STATEMENT
President Steve Cleland Steps Down After 2026 Season
At Saturday night's 2026 Presentation Night, Steve Cleland announced his decision to step down from the role of Willaston Football Club President.
In a heartfelt address, Steve reflected on a year filled with wonderful achievements, special memories and an enormous sense of pride in the people who make our club what it is.
Steve expressed his sincere appreciation to the committee, volunteers, coaches, players, sponsors, members and supporters who have contributed so much throughout the season.
In explaining his decision to step down, Steve spoke openly about his ongoing struggles with mental health and the importance of prioritising his wellbeing and family.
"I'm not stepping down because the role became too hard or because I couldn't handle being President. I'm not stepping down because I've lost the passion or because I've stopped caring. If anything, sometimes I think I've cared too much."
"The truth is, my mental health is not very good at all. I've reached the point where my mental health has to come first. Not because I want it to, but because it needs to."
Steve also spoke about the incredible support he has received from people within the football club during some of his most difficult moments.
"There are people who probably don't realise that they helped me through some of the hardest moments this year. That message, that phone call, simply asking how I was going, those little things meant more than you'll ever know."
He encouraged everyone within the Willaston community to continue looking after one another, reminding us that sometimes the people who appear the strongest are the ones struggling the most.
While stepping away from the presidency, Steve made it clear that his love and commitment to the Willaston Football Club remain unchanged.
The Willaston Football Club sincerely thanks Steve for his leadership, dedication, passion and commitment throughout the 2026 season. We wish him and his family all the very best and look forward to seeing them continue to be part of the Donnybrook family.
As Steve concluded his address:
"It's been one of the greatest privileges and honours of my life. I'll always love this club. I'll always be proud of this club. And no matter what, I'll always be a Donnybrook."
Thank you Steve
