🟥🟦 10 Years of Willaston Football Club in the Barossa Light Gawler Women’s League.
As the BLGW celebrates a 10 year season milestone, Willaston Football Club, is proud to be a part of the league from the very beginning. From the very first season in 2017 and every season since we have fielded a team in every grade. What started as a few ideas, people putting up their hands to attend meetings, volunteering their time to create something from nothing, recruiting players, create training schedules and programs to coaching the first U14 and U17 teams in 2017. It was
hard to recruit players due to it being something new to most girls but finished the first season with a sense of pride and admiration at how far they had come with the skills and game knowledge.
A very special mention to Belle Gray who has been there from the beginning as Women’s Football Director in 2017 and is still a very important influence in our side today. Our first coaches include the
late Louise Palk, Gavin Laubsch and Sarah-Jane Jameson. With full support of the Willaston Football Club Committee and then President Kieran Sankey our Senior Women’s entered a team in 2018 coached by life member Andre Boers. Together with Megan Boers-Veen they created a very special culture and set the foundation which would see the Willaston Football Club be arguably the best club in the BLGW league. The hard work never stopped on and off the field and special thanks to our fierce leaders in our previous Women’s Directors which include Bianca Williams, Shari Wilson and current Director Keera Satour.
The belief and the hard work of our side has allowed the creation of what Willaston brings to the BLGW and we are excited to say that after entering into our 8th consecutive Senior Women’s Grand Final in the 2026 season, we now hold the leagues first Back to Back Premiership win. Willaston Football Club now has a pathway from our youngest of players with All Girls Aus kick, u10s, u13s, u16s to Senior Women all thanks to the BLGW. Throughout the years we have developed AFLW and SANFLW grade players and coaching staff as well as those who are legends amongst the BLGW league. Families can come to our club and there is a space for every girl and woman to develop their skills, meet new friends and learn about the Donnybrook ways of never giving up, about courage, strength and sheer determination.
We like to thank every past and current player, volunteer, sponsor and our family who have helped support and create a space where our girls and women can play the greatest game in the world, be proud of our history and culture and proud to put on the red and blue and be a Donnybrook. We truly have embodied the “One in, All in” and we look forward to the next 10 years of the BLGW.
